According to the classification established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B2 corresponds to an upper intermediate level that identifies a separate user able to communicate with some ease on various topics. It is important to remember that B2 is a level of proficiency in a gradation of 6 levels, A1 being the most basic and C2 the most advanced, not a diploma or official certificate. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Common European Framework for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment) is an initiative of the Council of Europe in order to promote and implement criteria of linguistic convergence in Europe through description parameters and objectives common assessment. This common framework standardizes and unifies the powers of language emphasizing what the user "can do with language" rather than the user "knows the language."
As stated in the UPM rules, students who begin to pursue studies leading to the degree in Engineering Technology and Telecommunication Services or degree in Biomedical Engineering must prove that level of English, and this is a essential to enroll in the compulsory subjects required:
(English I and English II)) stationed respectively in the first half and second half of the second year of the Plan of Graduate Studies / a Engineering Technologies and Telecommunication Services.
Professional use of the English Language. Second semester of the second year of the Plan of Graduate Studies / a in Biomedical Engineering.
Accreditation level of English can be performed externally or internally:
1) External Accreditation. Procedure for recognition.
Submitting an official certificate issued by an official certifying body (Official Language School, Cambridge University, Trinity College, etc ...). The certificate shall be accompanied by an instance in the Students' Secretariat.
2) Internal Accreditation.
Currently available in START POINT platform application prior diagnosis of level of English. Students who are not accredited B2 level or higher is recommended that the conduct for though this evidence is not evidence has the following utilities:
• Directs the person who performs it on your proficiency in the English language (is like the test done in English schools to determine the level of the group in which the student can enroll).
• Allows design courses to support learning English language taught in the second semester, deciding how many are given each level, to better adapt to the needs detected by these tests.
• Students who do not perform this test are not allowed enrollment in courses to support learning English language, as no information has to include them in one or another level.
For students in the diagnostic test were detected near the B2 level or above two tests of internal accreditation middle of each semester to distance them from examination periods are organized. These tests are conducted by faculty from the Department of Linguistics Applied to Science and Technology and as a result they can provide recognition of an equivalent level B2. It should be noted that this recognition internally serves to allow enrollment in courses of oral and written English language curricula of our expression, but without official recognition outside the UPM. This route of internal accreditation has no cost to the student, but are only provided to those previously realizasen diagnostic test.
Another route, this time leading to a formal certification level and does not require proof of prior diagnosis is contemplated in the TUNING platform. Here you can find some material to help prepare level tests and periodically through the platform, such accreditation tests (two tests per year aimed at students and two staff aimed at UPM) are performed. They UPM is "intermediary" of an entity approved to perform these accreditations, providing from the local university and IT tools to do it, but being designed and evaluated the evidence by anyone other than the UPM approved for it. In this sense these certifications do have official validity in and out of the UPM, while having a cost for people who are introduced to them (reduced for UPM regarding posed to the general public price).
3) Resources UPM for students who lack the required level.
The UPM has available to students the following resources:
3-1) Platform STARTING POINT, English Classroom. It is audiovisual material for the study of English language and self-diagnostic tests the level of knowledge of that language.
3-2) SETTING platform where students can find:
a. Explanation accreditation TOEIC exam: composition, structure and organizational details.
b. Testing shows that offers the certifier.
c. Elaborate set of links to external resources to successfully tackle the exam.
d. Multimedia self-study
e. Materials published by different publishers directed to prepare for certification chosen.
f. Coming recordings leveling courses were taught by professors from the UPM will be included.
Through the TUNING platform certification TOEIC test twice a year, once per semester at a cost of 67 € is convened. The certifying entity is "ETS (ETS)" and currently offer through this the possibility of certification in the two most popular languages (English and French) including the TOEIC (Test of Inglés for International Communication) and TFI (Test of International Français). Both offer results with reference to the levels specified in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Specifically, the TOEIC evaluates and certifies listening, reading comprehension and mastery of grammar, an international professional context, from the intermediate to advanced.
The reasons for this choice are:
- It is the criterion used worldwide to measure the ability to communicate in English at work.
- I make more than 5 million people a year.
- Serves as a certificate on more than 5000 international companies worldwide.
- They use over 2000 companies and major European international groups.
3-3) Courses support students with less than B2 level, which develop in the second quarter to not interfere in the process of immersion of new students in their respective grades. These courses are not organized by Centro but by Campus, aimed at students of schools or faculties geographically close. Are not yet scheduled Contracts for this academic year.
3-4) In some centers, the above measures are supplemented through English language teaching activities developed by faculty at the UPM or external.
