GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering is a 4-year course with 240 ECTS credits in accordance with the current syllabus of the UPM (2011 Plan). The cut-off in 2015 was 12,119.

The student must complete a total of 240 credits, which are divided into basic and mandatory, mandatory itinerary and electives courses (see details of courses).

The lesson is of present type and main teaching language is Spanish. 90 Places available are offered.

Why study the IB Bachelor in the ETSIT UPM? The program Bachelor in Biomedical Engineering UPM is the result of the commitment of this University to have a strong and stable activity in technology applications to life sciences within its Biotech program and take full advantage on a long term, intense and uninterrupted activity is finished in biomedical engineering from the UPM of the last 35 years.

The Bachelor in Biomedical Engineering from the UPM is of character inter centers and involves 6 Departments Centers of the UPM (ETSI Telecommunications, ETSI Caminos CYP ETSI Agronomists, Industrial ETSI, ETSI Computers, INEF). This multidisciplinary character is an essential element for the formation which brings together the best knowledge available at the UPM and through stable partnerships with other institutions, offers training of the highest quality and adequate to the existing and foreseeable professional demand.

The main strengths of Biomedical Engineering bachelor from UPM are:

1. Its students: Students are very good students and have a very high yield (average yield rate of 81% to date). They are students eager to learn and a great motivation for Biomedical Engineering and that can be seen in a large participation of students in the classroom and dynamics of enriching classes.

2. Its teachers: A large number of teachers of the bachelor has extensive teaching experience in matters of Biomedical Engineering (teaching in ETSIT IB is taught since 1983, degree in Telecommunications Engineering, doctoral teaching IB from the 1985 Masters and teaching since 2006). This experience leads to better training of students as well as the existence of countless laboratories for practical work.

3. Research leading in GIB: A large number of teachers participate in recognized research groups UPM performing cutting-edge research in the area of Biomedical Engineering (+18 groups), with numerous publications in prestigious scientific journals in the field IB (+450) and national research projects (+180) and international, mainly from the European Union (+130 in the last decade) all "in the field of Biomedical Engineering". This research activity results in better student training and continuous updating of the contents of the subjects. Likewise, students benefit from the use of resources provided by research laboratories.

4. The Wager of the UPM for Biomedical Technologies: The Polytechnic University of Madrid has a strategic commitment to the activities in the biomedical sector, the so-called Biotech initiative, which promotes among its objectives the achievement of stable research agreements with external partners and promotes the availability of advanced scientific and technological infrastructure. Among these facilities is the Center for Biomedical Technologies UPM (CTB) created to stably integrate researchers from very different disciplines of Biomedical Technology, in order to address some of the great scientific challenges today in Health and Biomedicine. The bachelor students have access to the activities organized in the CTB.

5: Mobility Erasmus: Students who wish to have a place for a stay abroad (provided they meet the requirements). The center has agreements to exchange specific Erasmus mobility of students in the bachelor of Biomedical Engineering with European prestigious universities (offering 80 places for students of the GIB degree course in the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 91 seats in progress).

6: Internships in hospitals: Students can practice in hospitals and biomedical research centers with which the UPM has signed educational cooperation agreements.

  • Hospital Universitario Infanta Leonor
  • Hospital Universitario de la Princesa
  • Hospital Universitario Gregorio Marañón
  • Hospital Universitario Clínico San Carlos
  • Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre
  • Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal
  • Hospital Universitario La Paz
  • Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares
  • Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas
  • Fundación Rioja Salud
  • Hospitales USP-Quirón
  • Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión Jesús Usón
  • Unidad Central de Radiodiagnóstico CAM

7. Curricular external Internships: Students can have up to 8 credits for the realization of external practices whether in hospitals, companies and research centers.

8. Final Year Project: are always applied works, most conducted in collaboration with medical professionals. Examples of TFG made by students:

• Design and development of custom deformable virtual models for planning interventions aortic catheterization

• Study of anatomical connectivity using probabilistic tractography for characterization of essential tremor

• Development of a set of electrical stimulation of osteoblast cell culture and study of cell viability and differentiation after application in mouse osteoblast cultures.

• Computational Model for inverse dynamics of human gait

• Development of a multi-criteria decision algorithm for managing waiting lists at the request of holter

• Study of visual attention patterns in patients with acquired brain injury through eye-tracking techniques

• Development and evaluation of a system of evaluation of attention deficits in patients with acquired brain injury through techniques of "eye-tracking"

• Analysis and design of a dispenser system for liquid intake in patients by monitoring drive and regulation

• Evaluation of a cognitive rehabilitation environment based on technologies Interactive Video and Eye-Tracking.

• Design and implementation of a 3D methodology for analyzing and processing studies of magnetic resonance imaging of patients with acquired brain injury.

• Development of a tool for quantifying phenotypes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from computed tomography images

• Development of algorithms for analysis and visualization of myocardial substrate of ventricular tachycardias from MRI delayed enhancement (DE-MRI)

• Development of a tool for detection of abnormal tissue in digital mammography by neural networks

• Development of a system of scanning and image analysis microscopy to diagnose tuberculosis through collective intelligence and gamification.

• Calculation of diagnostic parameters on the waves of blood pressure and anesthesia scenarios plethysmography

• Study survival and alignment 3T3 fibroblasts in the presence of low frequency magnetic field and low intensity.

• Development of an experimental equipment for cell electrostimulation modifying the different parameters of stimulation.
