Abstract

Integrated photonics is moving from the lab to the real world across a wide range of applications, from telecommunications to sensing. In particular, the ability to leverage mature semiconductor fabrication processes for the mass production of photonic integrated circuits enables significant reductions in system size, weight, and cost. This is accelerating the adoption of photonic technologies in a growing number of fields. In this seminar, I will provide an overview of the current state of the art in silicon photonics for sensing applications, including integrated spectrometers, inertial sensors, biochemical sensors, and optical fiber sensor interrogators.

Speaker

Claudio Otón (born 1978, MSc Physics 2000, PhD 2005) is a Spanish physicist based in Pisa, Italy. After his PhD in University of La Laguna, Spain, he spent 4 years in the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton, UK, and 3 years in the Nanophotonics Research Centre at Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain. Since 2012 he has been at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Pisa, Italy), where he is currently Associate Professor in the Institute of Mechanical Intelligence, in the research area Photonic Sensing Integrated Systems. He has more than 10-year research experience in silicon photonics and photonic sensing, authoring more than 150 publications (3000+ citations). He has coordinated numerous research projects funded by the Italian government, European Union, Italian Space Agency, and several industrial contracts.
